Azerbaijan Ecotourism Association Formed to Drive Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Protection

BAKU — Inspired by recent national sustainable development initiatives introduced under the administration of President Ilham Aliyev, a dedicated group of experienced industry professionals has officially announced the formation of the Azerbaijan Ecotourism Association (AETA). This newly established organization aims to spearhead the implementation and widespread promotion of ecological culture and sustainable tourism practices throughout the country, positioning Azerbaijan as a regional leader in environmental stewardship and responsible travel.

The establishment of AETA comes at a pivotal time when the global tourism industry is increasingly shifting its focus toward sustainability, biodiversity preservation, and low-impact travel. Recognizing the vast natural and cultural potential of Azerbaijan—ranging from its diverse landscapes to its rich rural traditions—the founding members sought extensive guidance from both domestic and international authorities before finalizing the association’s framework.

In the lead-up to their official launch, the founders engaged in consultations with a wide array of esteemed local and foreign organizations. Key collaborators and advisors include The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the REM Caucasus Regional Eco Center, the DAIR Hotels and Restaurants Association, and the Azerbaijan Nature Protection Society. Additionally, the initiative has aligned closely with key national bodies, including the State Tourism Agency and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, ensuring that AETA’s strategic vision complements broader governmental environmental policies.

A Mission Rooted in Sustainability and Growth

The primary objective of the Azerbaijan Ecotourism Association is to support, facilitate, and accelerate activities that will elevate Azerbaijan to a leading position among sustainable tourism destinations globally. As part of its core mission, AETA is committed to advocating for the development of an ecological culture, advancing environmental protection standards, and ensuring the active conservation of the nation’s rich biodiversity.

To achieve these ambitious goals, the association plans to foster the creation of innovative ecotourism products tailored to modern travelers who prioritize environmental responsibility. These initiatives will encompass a wide spectrum of sustainable offerings, including outdoor recreational activities, healthy and locally sourced ecological food systems, agritourism, rural community tourism, eco-hotels, and sustainable eco-hospitality models. Once developed, AETA will actively promote these products on international markets, effectively marketing Azerbaijan abroad as a premier destination for ecotourism.

The founders have jointly emphasized that they will dedicate all their resources and expertise to ensuring the success of eco-culture and ecotourism within the country. Furthermore, they are issuing a broad call to action, inviting the Azerbaijani public to support them on this transformative path. A particular emphasis will be placed on engaging and motivating the younger generation to take an active role in championing environmental sustainability within their local communities and professional fields.

Leadership and International Collaboration

At the helm of AETA is Samir Dubendi, who serves as the association’s leader. Mr. Dubendi brings extensive leadership experience to the role, currently acting as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the DAIR Hotels and Restaurants Association and as a head lecturer in the Hotel and Restaurant Business Department at the Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University (ATMU).

Expressing optimism regarding the rollout of the association, Mr. Dubendi stated that AETA is expected to be fully operational within a month. "We are working hard to do everything as rapidly as we can," he noted, highlighting the urgency and dedication driving the founding team.

Mr. Dubendi also underscored the importance of maintaining robust international partnerships as the association moves forward with its strategic agenda. He noted that ongoing collaboration with global experts and institutions will be vital to adopting best practices and elevating national standards to international levels. "My colleagues and I hope to be in permanent touch with TIES, to adopt and share your indispensable experience," he added.

An Experienced Foundational Team

The establishment of AETA is backed by a leadership team possessing deep professional acumen and extensive expertise across tourism, hospitality, and environmental management. Alongside Samir Dubendi, the association was co-founded by Zurab Israfilov, Rufat Gojayev, and Vugar Dargahov. Each of these founding figures brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record in their respective fields, providing the association with strong administrative and strategic guidance from its inception.

The launch of the Azerbaijan Ecotourism Association has already garnered positive international recognition. The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) has extended its formal congratulations to the founders of AETA, acknowledging the significance of this new undertaking and welcoming Azerbaijan’s renewed commitment to global ecotourism principles.
