Luxury Cruise Lines Expand Philippine Itineraries with Focus on Lesser-Known Islands and Extended Stays

The Philippines is set to welcome a significant expansion in luxury cruise tourism over the coming years, as premier international operators including Ponant and Silversea ramp up their sailings to the archipelago. Industry stakeholders report that upcoming itineraries have been meticulously crafted to offer travelers deeper engagement with the destination, featuring extended stays and exclusive visits to some of the country’s most secluded and picturesque lesser-known islands.

This strategic shift toward more immersive maritime journeys highlights a growing global appetite for experiential travel that looks beyond conventional ports of call. With an archipelagic landscape comprising more than 7,000 islands, boasting pristine beaches, rich marine biodiversity, and a vibrant cultural heritage, the Philippines is uniquely positioned to capture the imagination of high-end travelers seeking authentic exploration combined with five-star onboard comfort.

According to Shan Dioquino David, CEO and president of CITTI Elite—the preferred sales agent in the Philippines for Silversea, Ponant, and Scenic Cruises—the demographic driving this growth is predominantly international. "Most clients who booked are sailing from all over the world. Domestic travellers are very minimal," David noted, emphasizing the strong global appeal of these specialized regional voyages.

The expansion plan features a robust lineup of sailings spanning late 2027 through 2028, showcasing diverse regions across the archipelago, from the northern frontiers of Batanes down to the central Visayas and Palawan. Among the most anticipated deployments is Ponant’s upcoming nine-day Philippine cruise aboard the luxury vessel Le Soleéal. Scheduled to run from February 3 to 11, 2028, this specialized itinerary is designed to showcase the maritime beauty and coastal charm of the country’s central waters. The voyage will embark from Manila, making its way to Iloilo in the Visayas before charting a course toward several captivating yet lesser-known island destinations in Leyte, including Kalanggaman, Limasawa, and Higatangan. The route will also include stops at Sibuyan in Romblon and Calapan in Oriental Mindoro, before concluding its journey back in the capital city of Manila.

In addition to domestic coastal explorations, Ponant is incorporating the Philippines into broader regional discovery routes. The cruise line’s "Horizons of East Asia and the Philippines" voyage, scheduled from October 23 to November 5, 2027, presents an extensive 14-day itinerary that bridges multiple nations. This ambitious journey covers cultural and economic hubs including Busan in South Korea, Shanghai in China, as well as key destinations in Japan and Taiwan. Crucially, the itinerary dedicates four days specifically to the Philippines, offering passengers rare shore excursions in Batanes, Claveria in Cagayan, the famed Hundred Islands in Pangasinan, and Manila.

Silversea is similarly bolstering its presence in Southeast Asian waters through its ultra-luxury expedition fleet. The cruise line’s vessel Silver Cloud is slated to operate a comprehensive expedition cruise from June 9 to 23, 2027. This trans-regional voyage will connect Darwin in Australia with ports in Malaysia and Indonesia, while dedicating nine rich days to exploring the diverse coastlines of Luzon and the Visayas. Demonstrating its commitment to the region, the same ship will immediately undertake a return voyage from Manila to Darwin, operating from June 23 to July 14, 2027. This itinerary will incorporate similar international stops in Malaysia and Indonesia alongside a dedicated six-day exploration of Philippine shores.

Further expanding Silversea’s regional footprint, the cruise line’s Silver Muse will embark on a dedicated Taiwan, Philippines, and Malaysia itinerary from December 5 to 19, 2027. This carefully curated voyage will bring international luxury travelers directly to Manila, alongside marquee Philippine destinations renowned for their natural splendor, including Coron and Puerto Princesa in the island province of Palawan.

The momentum in the sector is further reinforced by the planned return of Scenic Cruises. Having successfully introduced programs in the Philippines in 2025, the luxury operator is scheduled to bring its vessels back to the country in 2028, signaling sustained confidence in the destination’s tourism infrastructure and appeal among high-net-worth travelers.

David explained that these meticulously planned itineraries, which increasingly feature lesser-known provincial destinations, are directly responding to a notable shift in consumer behavior. The rising preference for off-the-beaten-path locations is attracting significant interest from luxury expedition cruise operators eager to showcase the nation’s unparalleled natural geography and historical depth. "Post-pandemic, luxury travel trends have spiked interest in upscale, experiential expedition cruising across South-east Asia, especially in the Philippines," David explained, underscoring how modern luxury travelers are increasingly prioritizing enrichment, discovery, and exclusivity over traditional mass-market tourism.
