Cordelia Cruises has significantly expanded its footprint and operational capacity within the Indian domestic travel market with the official launch of its newest vessel, the Cordelia Sky, operating out of Mumbai. This strategic milestone marks a major step forward for the cruise line, which has been working to popularize sea-based vacations among Indian consumers since it first commenced operations in 2021.
The newly introduced ship began its inaugural guest sailing on October 23, 2026, opening up a fresh wave of capacity and expanded itinerary offerings for travelers looking for domestic and international getaways. In a simultaneous development on the exact same day, the cruise line’s established vessel, the Cordelia Empress, commenced its new season by setting sail from Kochi. This dual launch marks a historic first for the company, enabling Cordelia Cruises to operate two distinct ships concurrently from two separate Indian homeports for the very first time.
This expanded operational footprint directly broadens Cordelia’s portfolio of domestic and international itineraries. Travelers departing from the Mumbai and Kochi homeports now have access to an enriched selection of routes, including regional favorites such as coastal cruises to Goa and voyages to the pristine beaches of Lakshadweep. Additionally, the expanded scheduling features short weekend sailings designed for quick getaways, alongside international voyages reaching the popular tourist destinations of the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Ahead of the vessel’s official commercial sailing, senior leadership hosted a news conference on board the Cordelia Sky to outline the company’s broader expansion strategy. Addressing the media, Jurgen Bailom, president and CEO of Cordelia Cruises, emphasized that the introduction of the new ship is designed to provide travelers with a significantly broader selection of destinations and itinerary options as the domestic cruise market matures.
Reflecting on the journey of the brand, Bailom noted that five years ago, the enterprise began with a clear vision to firmly establish cruising as a mainstream holiday choice for Indian vacationers. Today, with both the Cordelia Empress and the newly integrated Cordelia Sky operational, the company is already looking ahead, with several more ships currently in the pipeline. Bailom explained that future fleet expansion will align directly with the broader development of India’s maritime and cruise infrastructure across the coastline.
Highlighting the rapid infrastructure development supported by national initiatives, Bailom expressed high optimism for the future, noting that the company anticipates having enough vessels in the future to cater to ports currently under development across India. While avoiding a specific numerical commitment regarding port deployment, he pointed out that with dozens of ports expected to be built in the near future, the company aims to establish a strong presence across a substantial portion of them.
The newly deployed Cordelia Sky offers a robust selection of itineraries tailored to various vacation preferences. These include short two-night cruises at sea and dedicated trips to Goa, three-night Goa sailings, four-night trips exploring the scenic islands of Lakshadweep, and comprehensive five-night itineraries that seamlessly combine both Goa and Lakshadweep into a single voyage.
Designed to accommodate a large volume of travelers, the Cordelia Sky features a capacity of 2,280 guests at full occupancy, distributed across 1,002 staterooms. A key feature of the vessel’s accommodation layout is its emphasis on premium offerings. The ship houses 245 Mini Suites, 11 Penthouse Suites, and four luxurious Chairman’s Suites, catering to guests seeking an elevated level of comfort and exclusivity during their holiday at sea. Beyond accommodations, the vessel is equipped with a wide variety of onboard facilities, including diverse dining venues, large-scale theatrical production shows, live entertainment, sports and wellness amenities, and extensive outdoor deck spaces designed for relaxation.
Nishikant Upadhyay, chief financial officer of Cordelia Cruises, elaborated on the strategic decision behind the ship’s cabin configuration, pointing out that the company has consistently observed strong and steady demand for premium-category accommodations. Drawing from operational experience with the Cordelia Empress over the past five years, Upadhyay noted that the older vessel faced a natural capacity limitation regarding high-end cabins, featuring only 69 premium-category rooms out of a total of approximately 800. By contrast, the Cordelia Sky addresses this pent-up market demand by dedicating about 260 of its roughly 1,000 cabins to the premium category, significantly expanding the availability of high-end staterooms for discerning guests.
Beyond the immediate tourism and hospitality benefits, the cruise line’s ongoing expansion is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities across the region. Bailom shared that Cordelia Cruises currently provides direct employment to approximately 2,500 people through its comprehensive shipboard and shore-based operations. Looking ahead over the next five years, the company has set an ambitious target to scale its direct workforce to 25,000 employees as the fleet and associated operations continue to grow.
While leisure travelers remain the primary driver of business, corporate travel, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and destination weddings continue to represent vital demand segments for the cruise line. According to Bailom, corporate and MICE business consistently accounts for roughly 30 to 35 percent of the company’s overall market share. He noted that these specialized segments will continue to play a crucial role in driving the sustained growth and commercial viability of the cruising sector in India.
Since officially commencing operations in 2021 under the operation of Leisure Tourism Limited, Cordelia Cruises has successfully welcomed more than 800,000 guests on board its vessels. Through its ongoing fleet expansion and strategic deployment of ships like the Cordelia Sky and Cordelia Empress, the company continues to introduce the modern cruise experience to a rapidly widening segment of Indian travelers, reshaping the landscape of domestic leisure tourism.
