After being forced to leave its long-standing home in Serbia amid severe political, security, and financial threats stemming from its vocal support for local students, the internationally acclaimed EXIT Festival has officially announced its triumphant return to the iconic Petrovaradin Fortress. Organizers have revealed plans for a special edition in 2027, paving the way for a full-scale, traditional homecoming in 2028.
The announcement comes in the wake of a historic election victory achieved by Serbia’s student-led movement for freedom and justice. This monumental political shift successfully brought an end to more than a decade of dominant political rule by Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling party, transforming the sociopolitical landscape of the country and clearing the path for the festival’s much-anticipated return.
Founded in the year 2000 as a grassroots student movement fighting tirelessly for democracy, peace, and societal change, EXIT rapidly evolved over the next two decades into one of Europe’s premier music festivals. Beyond its reputation for world-class musical lineups and massive international attendance, the festival has consistently maintained its identity as a global symbol of unity, activism, and positive social impact.
Twenty-six years after its humble beginnings as a catalyst for democratic reform, history came full circle when EXIT chose to publicly stand beside a new generation of Serbian students. These young activists took to the streets to protest for freedom, justice, and institutional accountability. However, this unwavering solidarity came at a heavy cost. Following intense political interference, security escalations, and severe financial pressures orchestrated by the state, the festival found itself unable to host its traditional edition at the Petrovaradin Fortress in 2026.
Throughout this turbulent period, EXIT remained steadfast, refusing to back down. It utilized its extensive social media platforms and launched various advocacy initiatives to amplify the voice of the student movement. This stance persisted despite escalating threats and targeted pressure from authorities. The hostility reached a alarming peak this May, on the very eve of one of the largest student protests in modern Serbian history, when the brother of festival founder Dušan Kovačević was detained by authorities in what was widely viewed as a retaliatory intimidation tactic.
Reflecting on the grueling journey and the ultimate triumph of the movement, Dušan Kovačević, Founder and CEO of EXIT Festival, shared his profound relief and excitement. Last year, when a vibrant new student movement emerged to fight courageously for freedom and justice, he noted that the festival simply had to stand with them and uphold the core values upon which EXIT was built. Even if it meant risking and potentially sacrificing everything that the team had spent their entire lives building, standing on the right side of history was the only option. Now, thanks to the immense courage and relentless perseverance of Serbia’s students, freedom has returned to the country. After taking the unique spirit of EXIT to audiences around the world during its exile, the organization is finally coming home.
The emotional announcement was also shared with fans worldwide via an emotional post on Instagram. The festival confirmed that while the original logistical plan mapped out a full-scale return for 2028—owing to the complex 18 months of rigorous production preparation required for an event of its magnitude—the overwhelming response and passion from the fan base fundamentally changed those calculations.

Organizers noted that they had always promised their loyal attendees that EXIT would return the exact moment freedom returned to the nation. Thanks to the extraordinary courage, determination, and incredible perseverance demonstrated by Serbian students, that historic moment has finally arrived. Recognizing that the dedicated community of festival-goers simply could not wait that long, and sharing that exact sentiment themselves, organizers confirmed they are already coming together at the legendary Fortress next July to celebrate freedom, unity, and love.
This exciting announcement also successfully fulfills a powerful symbolic promise made back in July. During the exact days when the festival would traditionally have taken over the grounds, EXIT organizers and students from Novi Sad gathered together at the Petrovaradin Fortress in a powerful display of solidarity. During the gathering, EXIT proudly raised a massive banner bearing the words "STUDENTS ARE WINNING," while the students immediately hung another banner right beside it, declaring with hopeful defiance, "NEXT YEAR AT THE FORTRESS."
At the time, although everyone involved shared a deep-seated belief that freedom would eventually prevail, nobody could predict whether the political tides would turn soon enough to transform those hopeful words into a concrete reality. Today, after months of uncertainty and struggle, they finally have their definitive answer.
During the year the festival was forced to spend away from its traditional Serbian home, EXIT did not remain dormant. Instead, it embarked on an ambitious international expansion, successfully delivering a series of eight major events across six distinct countries. This global tour stretched from Montenegro and Croatia all the way to Malta and Spain, culminating in a historic milestone: the Starlight Festival staged at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Held in October 2026, the Egyptian event drew widespread international acclaim, bringing together more than 40,000 visitors hailing from 114 different countries.
Having successfully carried its signature energy and independent spirit to audiences across the globe, EXIT is now turning its full attention toward what promises to be its most emotional and significant homecoming yet. After years of political turmoil, resistance, and international touring, EXIT is officially coming home.
Further comprehensive details regarding the special 2027 edition, including the overarching thematic concept, initial artist lineup, exact event dates, and ticket sales information, will be announced in the near future by EXIT.
